Doing it Yourself?

If you have decided that your upcoming move can be handled without the help of professional movers, then the following pointers may be useful as you count down the days until the “big move.”
- Instead of looking at the prospect of moving as one huge overwhelming task, break it down to manageable segments such as rooms. Make plans to pack one room at a time and stay focused on that area of your home regardless of the temptation to move into other rooms. If that one room is still too daunting, break it out into segments within the room if it’s a bedroom view the clothes, the bedding, the accessories and knick-knacks all as separate “to do” items.
- Buy your boxes (or re-use the ones you kept from your last move or borrowed from a friend). Make sure you have a wide assortment of sizes since you don’t want to fill a big ox with heavy items keep the heavier items reserved for smaller sized boxes. Also buy your wrapping paper (or use old newspapers, but be warned newsprint can bleed onto what it’s wrapped around), tape, markers to clearly mark contents of each and every box in as much detail as possible. Don’t just write “shoes” if there’s more than one member of the household that is moving.
- While packing, don’t forget to empty dresser and cabinet drawers since to not do this only adds weight to an already heavy piece of furniture. Once emptied, it’s a good idea to seal door s of cabinets with blue painters’ tape. You can do the same with dresser drawers unless you plan to remove them to move separate from the main piece.
- When loading the truck try to load in the order that you want the boxes removed at the other end. In other words, first on at this end will be last off at your destination. If you’re going to need quick access to things such as cleaning supplies or documents, make sure they are the last to be loaded.
- If you have large area rugs remember to load these after all the furniture since you’re going to want to unload them before the furniture at your destination so floors can be protected.
- If you are planning on loading a truck and still having to spend the night before physically “hitting the road,” make sure you leave necessary bedding and toiletries unpacked until the very end. By being the “last on” when you leave, they’ll also be the “first off” at your destination should you pull in late at night and need these items for sleeping before unpacking the next morning.
So there you have it. The secret to a successful move is to tackle it in small increments and think about “the other end” before you even get there. With these two practices in place your move should go off without a hitch!
